NRCC, DCCC Involved In Primaries
While I usually do not agree with parties getting involved in primaries, in the cases above and the ones explained in the article I do agree. However, Reynolds has jumped into other races. Reynolds said he was acting as an individual and not as chairman of the NRCC when he traveled to Texas in support of Iraq war veteran Van Taylor prior
to Taylor's March 9 Republican primary victory
over former congressional aide Tucker
Anderson. Texas Gov. Rick Perry
also endorsed Taylor prior to the primary as
the preferred candidate to face Democratic Rep. Chet
Edwards on the November ballot. In South Carolina, Vice President Dick Cheney
headlined a fundraiser Friday for Ralph
Norman, a state legislator and real estate developer who is hoping to
unseat Democratic Rep. John Spratt. Several
days before the Cheney visit, Norman's
Republican primary opponent, Park Gillespie, dropped out of the race
As a party, I do not believe we can sit on the sidelines and allow unelectable candidates to win nomination battles.
This is a crucial year for Republicans, and if the NRCC has to expand their reach into primaries-I believe it is warranted.
In the case of the Gillespie/Norman race, there should never have been a question whom the party should have helped. Gillespie won Showtime's "The American Candidate" a few years ago, but was not a presentable electable candidate.
